Weather you are looking for premade cabinets or custom built cabinets you will want to read over the following information so you know what you need to know before you install the cabinets.
Always make sure you understand the policies and charges before starting service with a new company.
We will go over these six steps:
Before you install your cabinets you need to know the following:
Know where your electrical outlets and wires will be placed and what appliances need electricity such as microwaves, TV, lighting, stove, dishwasher, fridge, etc. You don’t want electrical outlets to be covered up by new cabinets. Remember the phone placement and its wires also.
Know where the plumbing will be for the sink and dishwasher.
Know if you are going to have lighting installed in or on the cabinets.
What type of flooring you will have underneath the cabinets? And have it in place.
Know where your heating ducts work is placed, so you don’t cover up a vent.
Know if you would like a special cabinet for recycling products.
Know where your cook top and built-in wall oven will be located.
You will need to know what size your oven/range will be so they can make sure your cabinets fit properly.
If you are doing a full remodel you will need to know where new windows will be placed.
You should have the walls painted before your cabinets are installed. This way no paint ends up on the new cabinets.
Find out if the state, county, and city your house is located in requires a building permit for the installation.
What to look for when they are out for measurement day.
Make sure when you are going to have the cabinets replaced or newly installed that you have your appliances out of the way, preferably in another room. Use a professional to disconnect and reconnect gas lines for stoves and other appliances that use gas. Electric stoves/ovens require a 220 volts line. A professional electrician is always recommended for disconnections and connections.
If you want handles or knobs on the new cabinets, decide where you want them to be located. You want to make sure you can easily open and close the cabinet doors with the handle or knob.
Make sure you have enough room between the base cabinets and the over head cabinets.
Make sure you know where you’re under the counter microwave or vent will be placed.
Find out when the starting and ending date will be. Get it in writing so there are no questions to when the installation will occur.
Make sure the person that is measuring for your cabinet’s measures them twice to double check the right measurement is written down.
Preparation before installing your cabinets
It is a good idea to protect your floors when you are bringing in cabinets. Use a drop cloth to help protect them. Also cover anything that you don’t want dusty. When installing cabinets you could stir up some dust. Also you may want to put a drop cloth over any open door ways to make sure dust does not escape into the rest of the house.
Make sure children and pets stay away from the remodeling area for safety.
As a general rule the installers must keep their work boots on for their safety. Cover your floors to help protect them.
Things to look for when they are installing your cabinets
When the job is nearly complete, look for any possible issues. Look for gaps between cabinets, crooked cabinets and misaligned doors, drawers that are not flush with the cabinets. Double check that the floor cabinets are level as this will play a very important part in counter tops.
Make sure they screw the cabinets to the wall because if they are not screwed to the wall properly they could fall over when fully loaded with items. They should screw the cabinets into the actual wall studs and penetrating to the center of the stud. This usually requires at least 3” screws.
Make sure they install a filler strip at the bottom of the cabinets this way it looks finished and not just a open gap at the bottom.
Make sure if you have cabinet knobs or handles that they are in place and properly tightened.
Make sure all the joints are tight; the hinges are in proper order, your doors are mounted correctly and that corner bracing is in place.
Make sure that the Lazy Susan works correctly. (If you have one)
When the installer is installing the cabinets make sure that he is using a good level. At minimum a 4’ level. It can either be a laser or manual level.
When the job is finished you need to make sure that the cabinets are level. If they are not level the counter top may not fit correctly. When working with granite, marble etc. countertops it extremely important to have the cabinets level. If the cabinets are not level all the way across the top of the cabinets you have a greater chance of breaking the counter top and or not having the seams line up correctly on the counter top.
Extra charges and other charges to look out for
Is there an extra charge to put the knobs and handles on the cabinets?
Is there an extra charge to put the doors and drawers in the cabinets?
If there are access issues, gates, elevator access vs. several flights of stairs, any rules that would dictate work area or parking restrictions there may be an access charge.
Most cabinet installers will not remove or hook up electric, plumbing, gas or any other appliances. You will have to have this complete before they arrive to install your cabinets. Check with the installer to see if they offer this service because some do but most don’t. If you don’t have this done when the installers come there could be an extra charge for their time and your cabinets may not be installed that day.
